An Approach to Breast and Thyroid Surgery

Surgical procedures for women’s health and endocrine (hormonal) system disorders require a high degree of medical precision and a multidisciplinary evaluation. In breast and thyroid surgeries, our primary goal is not only to ensure that the affected area is completely removed in accordance with oncological guidelines or medical standards, but also to preserve organ function and bodily integrity to the greatest extent possible.

Breast Diseases and Oncoplastic Surgery

In addition to benign conditions such as cysts and fibroadenomas detected in breast tissue, the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer are among the main areas of focus at our clinic. In breast cancer surgery, depending on the stage of the disease, “breast-conserving surgery” techniques are prioritized over the procedure of complete removal of the breast (mastectomy). These surgeries, in which the tumor is removed within oncologically safe margins and the anatomical integrity of the breast is preserved using oncoplastic (cosmetic surgery) methods, support patients throughout their physical and psychological recovery. The surgical plan is determined by a joint decision made during tumor board meetings attended by specialists in Oncology, Radiology, and Pathology. In addition, a “Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy” is performed to assess the risk of spread to the lymph nodes, thereby minimizing the risk of lymphedema in the arm.

Thyroid (Goiter) Surgery and Safety Protocols

Simple goiter, multiple thyroid nodules, overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), and thyroid cancers diagnosed by biopsy fall within the scope of endocrine surgery. Since the anatomy of the neck is highly complex, the primary concern in thyroid surgery is the preservation of the nerves that control the vocal cords (recurrent laryngeal nerves) and the parathyroid glands, which regulate calcium balance. To minimize these anatomical risks, our clinic uses intraoperative nerve monitoring technology during surgery. This system electronically monitors the nerves leading to the vocal cords and provides real-time alerts to the surgeon, thereby ensuring that the risk of postoperative hoarseness is minimized in accordance with international medical standards.
