Egemed Department of Nutrition and Dietetics: Scientific Nutrition for Your Health

Nutrition is not merely about satisfying hunger or losing weight for aesthetic reasons; it is the art of improving quality of life by consuming the macro- and micronutrients the body needs at the right time and in the right amounts. Poor dietary habits are the root cause of many chronic diseases, including obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and immune system disorders.

The Nutrition and Dietetics Department at Egemed Hospitals operates under the principle that “a diet is as unique as a fingerprint.” For all our patients—whether receiving outpatient care or undergoing inpatient treatment in our wards—we plan fully personalized medical nutrition therapies based on current body composition analyses and blood test results.

Clinical Nutrition and Disease-Specific Diets (Medical Nutrition Therapy)

In the treatment of many chronic diseases, the nutrition plan developed by a dietitian is just as vital as the medications prescribed by a physician. In our department, we provide medical nutrition therapy for the following disease groups in coordination with relevant specialist physicians:

[ Heart Disease and Hypertension ]

For conditions such as high cholesterol, high triglycerides, and high blood pressure, specialized cardiac diets are designed to protect cardiovascular health, with balanced levels of sodium (salt) and saturated fat.

[ Diabetes and Insulin Resistance ]

The cornerstone of diabetes treatment is preventing fluctuations in blood sugar levels. Patients are provided with lifelong, sustainable nutrition education based on low-glycemic-index foods and carbohydrate counting.

[ Kidney Diseases and Urinary Tract Stones ]

Depending on the stage of kidney failure (pre-dialysis or during dialysis), the kidneys’ workload is reduced through dietary restrictions on protein, potassium, and phosphorus. Fluid management and dietary modifications are implemented to prevent stone formation.

[ Gastrointestinal Diseases and Rheumatic Diseases ]

In gout, a condition caused by elevated uric acid levels in the blood, the frequency of attacks is reduced by developing specialized dietary programs that carefully limit the intake of purine-rich foods (such as red meat and organ meats).

Our Nutrition and Counseling Services Tailored to Life Stages

The human body’s energy and vitamin needs constantly change depending on age, gender, and the current biological stage. Our expert dietitians create personalized plans tailored to the unique dynamics of each stage:

Infant and Child Nutrition

Poor eating habits during childhood are the root cause of many diseases seen in adulthood, such as diabetes and obesity. By monitoring growth and development curves (percentiles), we provide parents with detailed counseling on introducing solid foods, managing picky eating, and choosing healthy foods.

Nutrition During Adolescence

Adolescence is a critical period during which bone growth accelerates, yet aesthetic concerns—such as weight obsession and the risks of anorexia or bulimia—also come to the forefront. By taking young people’s psychological well-being into account and helping them develop healthy eating habits without putting pressure on them, we can prevent the development of long-term health issues in the future.

Nutrition During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

The primary goals are to help the expectant mother prepare for pregnancy, ensure the baby’s healthy development in the womb (by building up stores of folic acid, iron, and calcium), and prevent excessive weight gain in the mother. Additionally, for expectant mothers diagnosed with gestational diabetes, blood sugar control is achieved entirely through diet, thereby safeguarding the baby’s health.

Sports Nutrition

Whether you’re a professional or an amateur athlete, maintaining an optimal balance of macronutrients is essential to sustaining your training performance at the highest level. The foods you should consume before, during, and after workouts are carefully planned by our experts to prevent muscle breakdown and accelerate recovery.

Obesity and Healthy Weight Gain Programs

Just as losing excess weight is a medical process, gaining a healthy amount of weight in cases of extreme thinness (malnutrition) is also a medical process. The goal of weight gain programs is not to gain fat indiscriminately, but to ensure an increase in muscle and fat mass appropriate for the individual’s body composition. Meal plans are tailored to be fully sustainable based on the individual’s metabolic rate, lifestyle, and preferred foods.

Nutritional Monitoring of Hospitalized Patients (Clinical Nutrition)

All patients receiving inpatient care in the clinical departments and intensive care units at Egemed Hospitals are under the supervision of our dietitians in addition to the medical treatment provided by physicians. To accelerate the post-surgery recovery process, reduce the risk of infection, and maintain a strong immune system throughout the hospital stay, specialized hospital diets (liquid, pureed, soft, diabetic, etc.) are regularly administered based on the patient’s swallowing reflex and digestive tolerance.
