Genetic and Molecular Hematology Tests

JAK2 EXON 12 MUTATIONS
JAK2 V617F

Description: This is the screening, using advanced molecular methods, for specific acquired DNA mutations in the JAK2 gene (specifically the V617F mutation and mutations in the Exon 12 region) that trigger the uncontrolled production of blood cells (particularly red blood cells and platelets) in the bone marrow.

Purpose: This test is ordered to establish a definitive genetic diagnosis of myeloproliferative disorders—such as Polycythemia Vera (excess red blood cells), Essential Thrombocythemia (excess platelets), and Primary Myelofibrosis (hardening of the bone marrow)—when unexplained elevated cell counts are observed in the blood.
