Microbiology, Culture, and Infection Testing
URETHRAL DISCHARGE CULTURE
Description: This is the process of culturing pathogenic bacteria by inoculating a suspicious, inflamed discharge from the urethra onto specialized culture media in a laboratory setting.
Purpose: To identify the causative agents of urethritis, particularly sexually transmitted infections such as gonorrhea, and to select the most appropriate antibiotic to eradicate the infection through an antibiotic susceptibility test.
Urogenital Mycoplasma, Urethral
Description: This involves screening a urethral swab sample using specialized methods to detect atypical bacteria (Mycoplasma and Ureaplasma species) that do not grow easily in standard culture media and lack a cell wall.
Objective: To diagnose cases of "non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU)" characterized by burning, discharge, and itching, and to halt these insidious infections, which can lead to infertility if left untreated.
