Microbiology and Immunology Tests
Quantiferon (TB Gold)
Description: This is an extremely sensitive and modern test that measures the cellular response (interferon-gamma release) of T cells in the immune system to the tuberculosis (TB) bacterium in the blood.
Purpose: This test is used to determine whether an individual has been exposed to the tuberculosis bacterium and, in particular, to diagnose "latent tuberculosis"—an infection that remains dormant in the body without causing any symptoms—in a much clearer and more reliable manner than the standard PPD skin test.
