Laboratory Test Guide: Tests Starting with the Letter "R"

A complete list of all tests performed at Egemed Hospitals’ Medical Laboratories that begin with the letter “R” is provided below. To help our patients understand these tests, a brief medical description and the purpose of each test group are clearly stated.

Hematology and Coagulation Tests

RISTOSETIN COFACTOR (VWF Activity)

Description: This is a specific hematological test that measures not the quantity of von Willebrand factor (vWF)—which plays a vital role in the blood clotting process—but rather how effectively it performs its function (activity).

Purpose: To establish a definitive diagnosis of von Willebrand disease, the most common inherited bleeding disorder in the general population, and to investigate the causes of unexplained bleeding.

Microbiology, Virology, and Infectious Disease Testing

Respiratory Syncytial Virus Antibodies

Description: This test measures the antibodies produced by the immune system in response to the RSV virus, which causes lower respiratory tract infections, particularly in infants and young children.

Purpose: To diagnose RSV infection, which causes severe bronchiolitis and pneumonia, and to confirm the causative agent during outbreaks.

Rubella IgG

Description: This test detects the presence of antibodies that provide long-lasting, lifelong protection against the rubella virus.

Purpose: This test is routinely ordered (especially for pregnant women) to determine whether the patient has had rubella in the past or has acquired immunity through vaccination.

Rubella IgG Avidity Test

Description: This advanced test provides detailed information about the timing of the infection by measuring the binding strength (avidity) of Rubella IgG antibodies in the blood.

Purpose: To clearly distinguish whether a rubella infection detected during pregnancy occurred before pregnancy or during pregnancy (during the period of risk for the baby).

Rubella IgM

Description: This test measures acute-phase antibodies produced shortly after the rubella virus enters the body, indicating an active (recent) infection.

Purpose: To diagnose whether the patient has an active rubella infection and, particularly in pregnant women, to assess the risk of mother-to-child transmission as part of TORCH screening.
